Changing careers isn't Plan B. It takes courage.

When someone tells me they want to switch industries, I almost always hear the same undertone: a quiet apology, as if they had to justify why they didn't just carry on 'normally'. Let me say this clearly: a career change isn't Plan B. It's often the braver choice.

Staying in your industry means choosing the familiar path. Understandable, predictable, but also comfortable. Switching means giving up status and security to start from zero, risking being treated like a junior again. That takes more courage than most people admit.

From recruiting practice I can tell you: career changers often bring exactly what teams are missing. Fresh perspectives, less tunnel vision, and a motivation many industry veterans lost long ago. Companies that recognise this gain more than they lose through missing years of specialist experience.

The trick lies in the story. If you sell your switch as 'I couldn't achieve anything in my old industry', you lose. If you tell it as a conscious, logical decision with a clear link to your transferable skills, you win. Ask yourself: which three competencies from my career so far are immediately useful in the new role? Those are the ones you put front and centre, in your CV, in your cover letter, in the interview.

A career change doesn't make you second choice. It makes you someone who decided consciously instead of walking on just because the path was already laid out. That's a story people like to hire.
